Wizz Air Welcomes UK Sustainable Aviation Fuel Mandate

Europe’s most sustainable airline will aim to power 10% of its flights with Sustainable Aviation Fuel by 2030

Wizz Air, Europe’s largest and the most sustainable airline globally*, has responded to the UK Government SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) mandate which will come into force from January 2025, welcoming the policy.

In addition to the mandate, Wizz Air supports the government review mechanism, which introduces a five yearly review from 2030 that will help manage prices and minimise the impact of ticket fares for passengers. Wizz Air believes a critical measure will also be the introduction of limiting price hikes in case of SAF shortages.

The airline, which has invested in Firefly, an innovative UK-based biofuel company, is firmly committed to working with the industry and government to meet the mandated requirements.

Yvonne Moynihan, Corporate and ESG Officer at Wizz Air said: “We welcome the UK SAF mandate recently introduced by the UK Government, which aligns with Wizz Air’s aspiration to power its flights with 10% SAF by 2030. It is important that policy makers hold the industry accountable, so we have a collective goal of reducing emissions as an industry. As the airline with the lowest carbon emissions per passenger globally, we are fiercely committed to our sustainability strategy and ensuring that we reduce our Co2 intensity year over year. We will continue to invest in and champion SAF – one of the key levers to decarbonisation of the airline industry.”
