Wizz Air to close its base in Prague
On January 23, Wizz Air announced the plans to close their Prague base on June 14. The Airbus A320 that is still based in the capital of the Czech Republic will be transferred to a new base in Vienna. Before leaving Prague, the carrier will close 6 of 9 destinations, performing flights only to London-Luton, Bari and Kutaisi.
According to Prague.tv, the base will be closed due to low demand out of Prague. Prague is the third base that Wizz Air announced to close in recent months. The first two bases, one in Lublin, Poland, and another one in Targu Mures, Romania, is going to be closed in June.
George Michalopoulos, commercial director of Wizz Air said that the company is always evaluates the profitability of their routes and services, and after careful analyze, the decision was made to move the capacities of the Prague base to a base with a higher demand.
Earlier in January, Wizz Air also discontinued its service in Brno. The last flight from Brno was performed on January 8, on London-Luton route. The closure of their base was dictated by the decision of local authorities to сreate a joint venture with Romanian low-cost airline Blue Air.
The new base in Vienna will be opened on June 14, right after the closure of 3 Eastern European bases. Wizz Air plans to station one A320, with further plan to add two A321s to their new base, making Vienna the biggest Western European company’s base after London-Luton.
