JAL deploys robots to help passengers with their luggage

Airline operator Japan Airlines (JAL) has begun trialing the use of automated robots to carry passengers’ luggage in the domestic terminal at Fukuoka Airport in Japan.

The Omron LD Mobile Robot is a self-navigating autonomous intelligent vehicle (AIV) designed for moving materials in challenging environments such as confined passageways and busy public locations.

The AIV trials will run until April 28, 2017, and will focus on providing a special service to passengers with reduced mobility and families with a baby carriage. The robots will be assessed on their ability to carry luggage items and to navigate the terminal.

JAL is making an effort to improve accessibility throughout the airport, which includes supporting customers with disabilities and older passengers.
