Incident at Singapore Airshow: Flight display jet crashes on show

A South Korean aircraft skidded runway and crashed into a grass verge catching fire during takeoff at Changi Airport, Singapore on February 6, 2018. The aircraft was part of a flight display at the Singapore Airshow.

The aircraft belongs to South Korean Air Force aerobatic demonstration team, the Black Eagles, which was taking part in an aerial display at the Airshow.

Changi Airport clarified in a statement that the incident took place on Runway 1 at approximately 1.30 pm. The pilot was sent to the airport clinic for a check-up and, according to the Strait Times, has suffered only minor injuries.

Although the Airport Emergency Service put out the fire, the runway was closed for several hours, delaying a “number of flights”. “The aircraft that skidded off Changi Airport’s Runway 1 this afternoon has been removed and flight operations are returning to normal progressively,” the latest Changi Airport update at 7.08 pm reads. “However, some delays to departure and arrival flights can still be expected. Passengers are encouraged to check changiairport.com or the iChangi app for the latest flight information. Our staff are assisting passengers where needed. We seek your understanding and thank you for your patience.”
