News from the Industry

BEUMER autover® adapts to changes in baggage sortation demand with new BEUMER autoca® carriers

BEUMER Group, a global supplier of automated baggage handling systems, has extended the capabilities of the BEUMER autover® independent carrier system (ICS) with the launch of the new BEUMER autoca® carriers which support a wider range of baggage sizes.

These new autoca carriers mean that the BEUMER autover system can now transport a wide variety of baggage, from standard to out-of-gauge (OOG). The new autoca carriers also support CrisBag® totes from BEUMER Group’s Crisplant® product range, enabling baggage to be easily transferred between autover and CrisBag systems at the same airport.

A dedicated autoca carrier collects a single item of baggage from a loading station, typically after check-in, and transports it independently to its destination. The new autoca carriers enable handling of OOG baggage on the same track and at the same speed as normal-sized bags. Not only do they all run in the same rail, the number of active autoca can also be adjusted on the fly to meet changing levels of sortation demand in the baggage handling system.

Both the autover and the CrisBag system are known for their “One bag per carrier/tote” design which increases traceability and security as well as ensuring accurate track-and-trace of baggage at every stage of the handling process. In recent years, airports and airlines increasingly wanted to track baggage and provide this as a service to passengers, as well as meeting the requirements of IATA Resolution 753 which comes into effect in June 2018. The high accuracy provided by autover and CrisBag ICS technology makes them ideal solutions to support both passenger and regulatory demands.

The inherent flexibility of the autover system is one of the reasons why airports such as Dubai, Montreal, Nice and most recently Sheremetyevo Airport, Russia, have chosen the system for flexible and reliable baggage handling. In Sheremetyevo the autover will help keep baggage connection time between terminals to a minimum, while allowing each item of baggage to be transported through a maintenance-free tunnel connection and to be allocated to the correct make-up position.

MorphoFACE: the new facial recognition solution from Safran Identity & Security

Safran Identity & Security has unveiled its new solution for seamless face acquisition and on-the-spot identity verification. Dedicated to private and public organizations, MorphoFACE integrates the company’s state-of-the-art face recognition technologies, ensuring a high level of accuracy.

MorphoFACE particularly helps airports and border checkpoints deal with the increasing number of travellers by providing a fast and highly secure biometric solution for face capture and matching in one single connected device. Based on the latest 3D video analysis technology, this solution combines reliability and ergonomics to enable a steady and seamless flow of users.

The compact unit offers a completely non-intrusive experience for travellers. It features only fixed components and can capture a wide range of sizes and profiles more quickly than conventional solutions which must mechanically adjust before acquisition. In addition, MorphoFACE has anti-spoofing capabilities to deliver robust, convenient identity check (against an ID document) or person identification (against a list of persons of interest). It is an interoperable solution which can be integrated into existing environments (e-gates, self-bag drop systems, kiosks, etc.). It is available for customers as a turnkey solution or as an embeddable kit for third parties to design their own customized solutions.

In a globalized world where airports and border checkpoints were vital hubs, Safran Identity & Security believed that ‘on the move’-biometrics would play a key role in securing borders while reducing wait times and improving travel experience, says Samuel Fringant, Executive Vice President. They were proud to contribute to making borders safer and smarter, he adds.

ADB SAFEGATE unveils its integrated tower solutions portfolio

Offering airports new approaches to air traffic management with solutions like its Integrated Controller Working Position, ADB SAFEGATE recently presented its integrated tower solutions. Tower solutions are an integral part of its Airport Performance strategy that extends across four domains – Gate, Tower, Airfield and Services. What sets ADB SAFEGATE apart is its ability to integrate these solutions, moving away from a silo approach. This helps airports manage growing traffic volumes more safely and efficiently. The company’s latest solution, the Integrated Controller Working Position (CWP) has also been launched recently.

Increasingly, Air Traffic Control (ATC) was becoming central to the overall airport operations setup, handling decisions on future traffic flows to support the tremendous growth in movements, said Christian Onselaere, CEO, ADB SAFEGATE. The terminal, airfield and tower, parts of the airport that worked quite independently before, needed to work together closely. Integrating these siloes was where they could significantly impact airport performance.

The ADB SAFEGATE tower portfolio comprises an Advanced Surface Movement and Guidance Control System (A-SMGCS), called CEMAX, Electronic E-strips (DIFLIS), Departure Manager (OPTAMOS) and Information System (INFOMAX). Together, these lessen air traffic controller (ATCO) workload, provide advanced safety net solutions, enable accurate routing and guidance and contribute to Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM) to improve predictability and efficiency in traffic flows.

The Integrated CWP incorporates important ATC tower systems into a consistent, user-friendly single screen to improve safety and efficiency. ATCOs can view multiple functions – surveillance and airport safety support, routing and guidance service, workflow support, meteorological data and navaids status, as well as monitor and control AGL from this screen.

ADB SAFEGATE tower solutions are deployed at major commercial and military airports around the world including Vienna, Innsbruck, Hamburg, Munich, Berlin, Tallinn, Lisbon, Lahore and Jakarta.

R.P.M. Tech presents the Blizzard, a compact Cold Air Blower

The Blizzard, a compact Cold Air Blower, is used to rapidly clear runway lights and maintain airfield pavement surfaces. Designed to be mounted on a wheel loader, this attachment is a useful investment for regional and municipal airports.

With its 581km/h (361 mph) high velocity wind and its remarkable 4.35m3/s (9165 CFM) airflow, the Blizzard removes fresh and packed snow around runway lights in seconds. This compact Cold Air Blower can also get rid of snow, ice patches, standing water, dust, and FOD’s on runways, taxiways, aprons, and airfield signs.

Using a current loader from a fleet, the Blizzard can be mounted in less than one minute. The cold air blower is equipped with an adjustable nozzle which provides the desired airflow ensuring precise and efficient clearing. Comfortably seated, the loader operator can easily control all the nozzle movements with a joystick installed inside the cabin.

Advantages of the R.P.M. Tech’s Blizzard Cold Air Blower are a safe and rapid light clearing process, replacement of runway lights manual clearing operations, increases in runway tolerance, diminution of broom usage, cleaning of pavement crevices where bristles cannot reach, reduction of operating costs and decrease in engine damages related to FOD’s.

DATA MODUL Expands the CONRAC Product Portfolio with an 86” Stretched Panel for Airports

DATA MODUL is expanding its portfolio of CONRAC displays and monitors with an 86”, ultra-stretched UHD TFT LCD display from LG for applications in airports and train stations. In addition to that, it is offering a chassis solution with controlling displays and additional, individual solutions.

The base of the display, in portrait or landscape format, is available with two levels of brightness: LD860DB-UJA1, with 500 nits, and LD860DB-UJA2, with 700 nits, and has only been on the market for a short time. As a premium distributor, the Munich-based display specialist DATA MODUL has had access to the first units, using them for customer-oriented optimisation, and has developed a CONRAC chassis version from the TFT LCD display in-house which is available as a prototype as of now.

In the airport, railway, and digital signage sectors, there is an immense need for high-resolution panels in unusual sizes, with brilliant colour depth and unrestricted legibility. The solution offered by DATA MODUL can be installed in a number of ways and is suitable for integration in stelae and existing housings. Due to its special dimensions, this model has also been designed for applications in narrow passageways / with limited construction space, next to or above doors, at bus or train stops. Used in POS, POI and transportations (train stations, public transportation, airports) and conceptualised for applications with wide-ranging and/or changing content, images, and language, the 86” open frame monitor conforms exactly to the needs of its specific customers. They are looking for the perfect panel solution in order to be able to guarantee operation under a full load, even in special environmental conditions like extreme temperatures and difficult, changing lighting conditions.

DATA MODUL also offers corresponding, user-oriented added values to accompany the TFT LCD display, like the UHD LCD controller board of the in-house developed eMotion series. The latest TFT displays with UHD resolution (3840×2160 at 60 Hz) and a colour depth of 24 bits / 30 bits (1.07 billion colors) can be controlled with this eMotion UHD. The high-resolution stretched TFT display being no exception with its V-BY-One interface. The eMotion UHD from DATA MODUL also offers eight lanes eDP. Multiple inputs are available for the LCD controller board’s signal sources. Two separate display ports (DP 1.2) and an HDMI (1.4) input are integrated, in addition to the established DVI (dual link) input. All known standard features from the eMotion board series, like dimming (analogue and PWM), as well as DDC/CI support, an OSD keyboard, or an IR remote, as well as 12- and 24-volt power supplies are supported.

Project-based, individual and complete monitors with housing based on different specifications (such as IP protection classes), using LG displays, can be realised. It is also possible to integrate embedded solutions in which case the monitor becomes an individual panel PC. That is how, for example, waterproof and dust-proof sealing of the entire unit, in accordance with IP65, or the avoidance of fans and filters makes maintenance-free operation conceivable. Several individual design possibilities open up many new possibilities to transportation and digital signage customers.
