Aircraft production in 10 years: what and who will make new-generation aircraft competitive?

Press Release Date 04.10.2017

Wings of the Future Aviation Forum: November 1-2, 2017, Renaissance Moscow Monarch Center

Dr. Pritchard, an Associate Professor at the State University of New York – Empire State College, Aviation Researcher, will speak at the Wings of the Future Forum on November 1st.

His presentation “Aerospace 4.0: Implications to the New Manufacturing Ecosystem” focuses on the Factory of Future for the next generation aircraft. The next generation aircraft (mid 2020s) could be adopting advanced manufacturing robotic applications (Cobots, Mobots), automated fiber placement, additive manufacturing and thermoplastic airframe structures.

The aircraft’s clean sheet designs will integrate advancing robotic technologies with transforming the assembly process by eliminating traditional monument style production equipment/tooling. The new clean sheet aircraft will be standardizing the practice of additive manufacturing components (3D printing) which obsoletes many traditional machining technologies.

The development new skills sets and processes will be globally competitive because new Tier 2 and 3 players are evolving in Asia that will supplant traditional manufacturing processes and will invest into the capital intensive new disruptive technologies.

What is the future for Sino-Russian Widebody Project?

As Dr. David Pritchard says, it might be time to give credit to UAC engineering prowess with the first out of autoclave composite wing for the MC21 (process to be used for C929).This composite technology will put the C929 at least on par with Boeing 787 and A350 and possibly ahead, since these aircraft programs were launched over 10 years ago.

Dr. Pritchard has over 25 years of aerospace experience in the areas of international business, finance and management. During his 30 year career in the aerospace industry, he has been involved with seven aircraft launches, managed international offsets programs, completed foreign financing transactions and has expertise in aerospace marketing and product introduction into the regions of Europe, Russia/CIS, China and Asia.

Dr. Pritchard’s research in the commercial aircraft industry focuses on the global supply network, and has been published in leading academic journals (extensively cited in The Economist, Financial Times, Newsweek, and Business Week). He also has articles in aviation trade journals such as Flight Global and Aviation Week, and has spoken at numerous aerospace industry conferences in the United States and abroad.
