Bamboo Airways inked MoU on IATA Environmental Assessment Program

Bamboo Airways becomes the first airline in Vietnam to join IATA Environmental Assessment Program in an attempt to mitigate environmental impacts and fortify sustainable development strategy.

Pioneer in pursuing “green” strategy
On June 21, 2022, Bamboo Airways and International Air Transport Association (IATA) inked an MoU on IATA Environmental Assessment Program (IEnvA) in Doha, Qatar.

IEnvA is an evaluation system designed to independently assess and improve the environmental management of an airline. Detail assessment of IEnvA program in each stage will create a solid foundation for airlines towards sustainability in both air operation and ground service.

Bamboo Airways has blazed the trail to implement this prestigious environmental assessment program in Vietnam, apply IEnvA standards in operation, maintenance, management, in-flight service, join personnel training courses, and use IATA consultancy service in environmental impact evaluation.

Mr. Dang Tat Thang, Chairman & CEO of Bamboo Airways, said the airline has geared up process of enhancing operation efficiency and driving initiatives to address the most significant environmental sustainability matters that face the aviation industry today.

“We would like to emphasize the significance of sustainability in aviation industry and further implement organized activities and initiatives to protect the environment. With IATA’s prestige, we strongly believe that IEnvA comprehensive assessments of operation, maintenance, management… will help increase the operational capacity of eco-friendly flights while boosting our operation efficiency and service quality,” said Mr. Dang Tat Thang.

Aviation sustainability

Sharing the same vision, many of the world’s leading airlines like British Airways, Qatar Airways, Air Canada, Etihad Airways, Turkish Airlines, etc., have implemented IEnvA to address environmental matters and target sustainable development.

Accredited to the highest level of IEnvA, environmental management system of Qatar Airways saw constant improvement in environmental policy, operation management, in-flight services, cargo transport, ground service, maintenance and repair, etc.

Meanwhile, Etihad Airways has driven many initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions such as using sustainable fuels, reducing contrails, flying optimized flight paths, operating electric vehicles, and working with partners who share its vision for cleaner skies.

Besides commitments to providing international 5-star service, optimizing passengers’ benefits, and connecting potential markets, Bamboo Airways has persistently pursued sustainable development via many eco-friendly products and campaigns since its establishment.

As of now, the airline has run many campaigns in raising awareness, reducing in-flight plastic waste, conserving ecology at destinations, expanding fleet with fuel-efficient engines, fuel-saving program for green flights, etc., to protect the environment, mitigate impacts of climate change in aviation sector, ensure effective business operation, and contribute to sustainable development. Taking part in IATA Environmental Assessment Program is Bamboo Airways’ next step to strengthening this strategy.

Breakthrough effort

Bamboo Airways’ signing activity took place within framework of the 78th Annual General Meeting and World Air Transport Conference – a significant aviation event that brings together leaders from nearly 300 member airlines of IATA along with many high-ranking delegates and aviation service providers.

One of the topics that drawn great interest is carbon reduction to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. This is also the commitment of Vietnam and 150 countries at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), with the mutual goal of contributing to global warming prevention.

This year’s congress took place in the context that global aviation is making breakthroughs after Covid. According to IATA’s latest report, Vietnam ranks 1st in 25 countries with the fastest recovery in domestic aviation market with a growth rate of 123% over the same period in 2019, ahead of many large countries such as Mexico, Brazil, Russia, Spain, etc.

After Vietnam resumed international network and tourism, aviation demand is growing strongly again. Data from Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam shows that passenger and cargo volume in the first six months recorded an upsurge compared to the same period last year.

Bamboo Airways also accelerated operation and recorded many positive signs for the recovery in new normal phase. The airline has quickly increased frequency of many domestic routes to meet the increasing travel demand and continuously launched many new international routes to Asia, Europe, and Australia. Following the recovery prospects of aviation industry, Bamboo Airways has prepared optimal operation plans, ready to expand to a network of 80 domestic routes and 40 international routes in 2022.
