Air Dolomiti and 3Bee: A project for the protection of Biodiversity

Pollinator-friendly plants and cutting-edge technologies for tracking and safeguarding pollinating insects in a new green space in Sommacampagna
Air Dolomiti, airline of the Lufthansa Group, is pleased to announce the launch of a new and ambitious project to support biodiversity, in collaboration with 3Bee, an innovative company that monitors and protects ecologial variety and pollinators using cutting-edge technologies.
The three-year project will initially involve the creation of a small biodiversity oasis a few kilometres from the company’s headquarters in Sommacampagna – Verona, where 100 nectar plants selected by 3Bee’s agronomic experts will be planted. The plants will be carefully selected to ensure scalar flowering, which will provide a continuous supply of nutrients to pollinators, an essential species for the ecosystem that is increasingly threatened by climate change and the loss of natural habitats.
The project will be constantly monitored using Spectrum technology, an IoT bioacoustic sensor developed by XNatura, which is capable of assessing the abundance and diversity of pollinating insects in the area.
Il Next year, the programme will be enriched with the introduction of some beehives equipped with Hive-Tech technology, with the aim of monitoring important environmental parameters, starting with the bee, a fundamental bio-indicator of the state of health of the ecosystem. The initiative is part of a wider context of initiatives undertaken by Air Dolomiti for sustainability and environmental protection.
The development of the oasis and its state of health will be supervised by the XNatura platform, which, through the integration of artificial intelligence, IoT sensors, satellite technologies and cloud computing, analyses in real time the regeneration of nature, climate and biodiversity of the areas followed by 3Bee. “This plan represents an important step in our mission to contribute to sustainability: we are aware of the environmental impact of our business sector and therefore we are committed to implementing real projects, at a time in history when the preservation of nature has become one of the most urgent challenges. We are proud to be able to promote initiatives that really make a difference,’ says Steffen Harbarth, CEO of Air Dolomiti.
“The active involvement of our employees in this project is crucial. We believe that each member of our team can give a real contribution to the cause of sustainability. Reflecting together on the importance of protecting biodiversity and encouraging direct action in support of the environment is an important step towards creating a sustainability-oriented corporate culture,” says Paolo Aldegheri, Air Dolomiti’s Vice President HR, Organisation, Legal & HSE.
“Our aim is to return damaged land to nature, transforming it into regenerated areas. The Biodiversity Oasis project was created to spread the culture of soil and landscape care, supporting virtuous farmers who, instead of taking from the land, protect and regenerate it. Each oasis is a more or less large Band-Aid on the skin of the planet, a gesture to restore the natural balance”, says Niccolò Calandri, CEO of 3Bee.
